It’s been 32 years since Septicflesh released their first EP, and it’s exciting to witness the path they’ve traveled and how they’ve evolved in their recent albums. Historically, the band has a wealth of material to offer. The founding members, Seth, Christos, and Sotiris, have over 30 years of death metal experience, which has never disappointed their listeners. The detailed lyrics combined with meticulously crafted music, staged performances, and atmospheric decorations provide death metal fans with the ultimate concert experience.
The Synthesis of Brutality and Elegance: Modern Primitive
Modern Primitive is the first album Septicflesh released under Nuclear Blast. In terms of composition and lyrics, it is no less complex than their previous works. This time, however, the band places a stronger emphasis on the message and theme conveyed through their music, which is also evident in their live performances. Sotiris shares the following about the album with listeners:
“The album’s title triggers a thought process. We wanted to encourage people to take a closer look at their primal instincts. With our music and lyrics, we provide so much food for thought that following the clues and synthesizing them shouldn’t be too hard. An important part of this complex mosaic is the album cover, which perfectly portrays the balance of brutality and epic elegance.
Here, you see what we interpret as a human head that has lost its original form, transformed into something else, something evolved. The cover clearly aims to reflect the current state of humanity. We are constantly evolving, but instead of moving forward, our evolution is regressive. We still have primitive traits embedded in our genes. This may be good, but it doesn’t mean it will always be that way. History continues to repeat itself in different forms.”
In Septicflesh’s discography, there is a noticeable continuity, with each album building upon the previous one. The band has long explored contrasting concepts like heaven and hell, good and evil, growth and destruction, often through metaphorical imagery. In their latest album, however, they take a somewhat critical view of social issues. Septicflesh does this not only to deliver good music and sophisticated lyrics but because, as part of society, they feel compelled to do so.
On Thorns I Lay
On Thorns I Lay is a Greek Death-Doom and Gothic Metal Band Founded in 1992 in Athens.
During the rise of bands like Nightfall, Septicflesh, and Rotting Christ in the early ’90s, the Athenians carved their own path in the music world. While their peers were exploring symphonic and black metal, On Thorns I Lay ventured into the realms of gothic melancholy. They are also among the bands of the first major wave of gothic doom metal, which pioneered the contrasting vocal approach known as the “beauty and the beast” style, which became popular in the late 1990s.
Their affinity for using motifs not only from Greek culture but also from the Mesopotamian and Anatolian regions has made it easy for Turkish audiences to adapt to their music. The use of instruments such as the ney, qanun, bağlama, and sipsi in their self-titled album released on October 13, 2023, is particularly noteworthy.
